According to the National Crime Agency, billionaire businessman Peter Virdee has been charged with bribing a government minister from Antigua.

The 50-year-old, also known as Hardip Singh, was wanted by the NCA as part of a multimillion-pound bribery case.

Virdee appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on May 23, 2024, where he was charged with bribing a foreign public official.

According to The Telegraph, he allegedly bribed Asot Michael, the former minister for tourism, economic development investment and energy for Antigua and Barbuda.

The alleged offences happened between January 2015 and July 2017.

The deal allegedly benefitted PV Energy, a company of which Mr Virdee is a director.

The Standard reported that PV Energy was simultaneously charged with failing to prevent bribery in relation to the same offences.

Virdee, who has met Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip on numerous occasions, is a prominent Sikh activist who grew up in Birmingham.

He made a fortune in property development and has a fleet of Rolls Royce cars including one with the highly sought-after 5INGH number plate, reputed to be worth at least £250,000.

It’s reported that Virdee to have posed for photos with eight-time Olympic gold medallist Usain Bolt, Hollywood actor Al Pacino and international pop star Rihanna.

It is believed that Peter Virdee has previously donated £100,000 to the Conservative Party and £2,000 to the Labour shadow minister Preet Gill, the member of parliament for Birmingham, Edgbaston.

It’s reported that Mr Virdee was released on bail after his appearance at Westminster Magistrates and will appear at Southwark Crown Court on June 20, 2024.
